Here’s how the 2023 Kia Sportage Compares to the Mazda CX-5

The 2023 Kia Sportage has been entirely redesigned and it is now more competitive than ever in the hotly contested compact SUV segment. Here is how it compares with the Mazda CX-5.

More practicality

The 2023 Kia Sportage is a very spacious vehicle that has no difficulty carrying large pieces of luggage or cargo that simply won’t fit in the Mazda CX-5. Indeed, Mazda vehicles often tend to be smaller than their competition on the inside and the new Sportage benefits from best-in-class rear legroom and cargo capacity. For example, the Kia offers more legroom and shoulder room front and rear in addition to more headroom in the rear than the CX-5. This makes everyone on board more comfortable, especially on longer journeys. In terms of cargo capacity, the Sportage has 1,121 litres of space behind the rear seat and 2,098 litres up to the front seats while the Mazda only has 872 litres and 1,679 litres in the same configurations.

A lower fuel consumption

The 2023 Kia Sportage is more fuel efficient than the Mazda CX-5 when equipped with its standard engine, and even more so when powered by the new hybrid powertrain. Indeed, while both the Sportage and the CX-5 come standard with 2.5L four-cylinder engines that deliver 187 horsepower, the one in the Kia only requires 7.4 L/100km on the highway while the Mazda’s needs 7.9 L/100 km in the same situation. This 0.5L difference is also the same when driving in the city. While this consumption figure is the lowest advertised by the CX-5, the Sportage can go even lower. This is because hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions have been added to the lineup this year, bringing the benefits of electrification to more drivers.

A more modern design

The 2023 Kia Sportage is one of the most modern SUVs on the Canadian market since it has received an extensive rework for the current model year that brought an entirely new design inside and out, new powertrains, and more technology. While it is true that Mazda also made some changes to the CX-5 as recently as 2022, these were little more than cosmetic tweaks, which means that the basic design and the engineering of this model still go back to 2017.
